Although the federal government has taken initial steps to address racial and ethnic disparities in health, closing the health gap will also depend on the efforts of states. As direct providers of care, regulators, purchasers, and policymakers, states are key to the success of any major health improvement initiative. This project will explore why states are not pursuing more concerted action on this front and then will develop and disseminate policies that state leaders and officials could champion and implement. Commissioned papers will detail various policy options, which project staff will present at national conferences and meetings of state legislators and health officials.
