This past April, the Fund released Quality of Health Care in the United States: A Chartbook, an ambitious reference work that combines compelling graphics and text to describe the overall state of the country's health care system. The chartbook, which relies on research findings from Fund grantees and other experts, has garnered considerable praise for its comprehensiveness as well as its clear, easy-to-read format. Certain areas of health care, however, require a more in-depth treatment than was possible for this first chartbook. In Phase Two of this project, Sheila Leatherman and her team will develop two additional, 'specialized' chartbooks on quality that focus on care for children and the elderly. In the future, the Fund will support one final phase of work to develop a fourth chartbook devoted to other vulnerable patient populations. Together, the series of four chartbooks will promote understanding among the public and within the health care sector about the need to improve care both in general and in particular for patients with special health needs.
